National Female ABAE Championship Finals 2011 Roundup

If you ever thought amateur boxing wasn’t for women, think again.

The 2011 National ABAE Female Championships showcased the very best talent the country has to offer from Schools and junior contenders to more established competitors.

With the number of matches increasing on last year, the stage was set for those eager to impress.

If you're unfamiliar with how rewarding amateur boxing is, the words of Carys Artingstall sum it up perfectly.

'I was kicked out of school last year and I was getting into trouble all the time,' said the 17-year-old.

'My coach Donna took me training every Friday. At first boxing gave me something worthwhile to do; it kept me out of trouble and off the streets. Now I've got a gold medal. Thanks to Donna and to boxing I've turned my life around.'

Amanda Groake, the ABAE’s advanced coach used the occasion to highlight the continued development of the sport and ensure it continues to grow and receives proper support and recognition.

'The ABAE intends to ensure that the strength of talent emerging at the moment is harnessed, and that the athletes are given the incentive to continue boxing once the championships are over.

It's great that women's boxing has gained momentum as we head into a significant year, but the key thing now is to ensure that the girls don't lose interest, and that they have a chance to train together, to get plenty of sparring experience. It's essential to keep that momentum going throughout 2012 and beyond.

'The ABAE recognises that female boxers need experience to progress, and I would like to thank the boxers and their coaches for their patience and dedication, and for their continuing support of women's boxing. We are working hard to get to a stage where, if a boxer has ambitions to make it to the highest level, and is willing to put in the work, the opportunities are given for them to develop and to have that chance.'

Were you supporting or participating at the event? What are your thoughts on the state of women’s boxing? Do you feel you can develop your skills even further; does the sport receive the respect it deserves? Please leave your comments in the box below.
